passwords keep reseting on services
Hi, we have this problem with a number of services to do with programs i.e. endpoint protection, backup exec in that we set a username and password for the logon service account which then works fine, but after a while the service will noy start as the passwords seem to go back to default or change themselves to a longer password in the service settings so we have to go in and re put in the correct password associate with the logon account, the service will then start fine again.Any ideas as to why the passwords keep changing themselves and we have to keep the correct password back in so we can start the service?Any help would be gratefully appreciated.ThanksChris

Hi, From your description, I understand you have changed default logon user account and password for some specific services, but these changes are never permanently saved. If I misunderstood, please let me know. 1)When the credential is revoked, please check the credential storage area as the following method: In Windows XP, navigate to:Control PanelUser AccountsAdvanced tabManaged Passwords button To access the stored credentials settings in Windows Vista, navigate to:Control PanelUser AccountsManage Your Network Passwords link in the left navigation paneClick AddSet the Credential type to "A Windows logon credential" What state of this credential is? Has it properly been cached locally? 2)Please also test the following method: Stop this services and proceed to change the password and restarted the services, and then please monitor this symbol for couple of days. 3)Some third-party applications and services may lead to this issue. Therefore, I'd suggest you perform clean boot as the following steps: a. Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility. b. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click Disable All (if it is not gray). c. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". d. Restart your computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the box and click "OK". After performing clean boot, please monitor if this issue still continues. If so, please provide me the following information: 1)What services do you change its default credential? 2)What system do you use? Windows XP or others?

Hi, thanks for the reply, we are using windows server 2003 and 2008 and it is on these systems that we are changing the logon account, it is some backup exec services and some endpoint protection services mostly but others do it to.Most of the things you have suggested seem to relate to client operating systems rather than servers which is what we are dealing with and is the forum we are in. we have stopped and restarted the services when we have to change the password and account name. Does some of the things you have suggested apply to a server because obvoiusly we can 't do some of the things as the server needs to be up all the time. Any other suggestions as to why this would be happening would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks again Chris.

Hi, i have not heard back since my last post on this, the answer given got marked as a correct answer when it was not, as he was referring to client operating systems rather than server OS which is what we have and is what i explained in the reply. If anyone has had this before or knows why this happening then please post your views as we need to sort this out. Thanks againChris

Hi, The reason I suggest performing clean boot is to remove possible aspects caused by third-party applications and services. Based on the fact that you want to ensure uninterrupted services, to further troubleshoot this issue, could you please perform the following steps: 1)Please check if the current user account that is used for service logon has been correctly granted "Log on as a service" permission. You can run "Rsop.msc" on the problematic server and follow the steps below to check this permission: a. Expand Computer Configuration, expand Windows Settings, and then expand Security Settings. b. Expand Local Policies, and then click User Rights Assignment. c. In the right pane, right-click Log on as a service, and then click Add User or Group. d. In the User and Group Names box, ensure the name of the current user account that you is used for service logon is included here. For more information, please visit: 327545 How To Troubleshoot Service Startup Permissions in Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;327545 2)Please also check the password settings of service account. Has it been configured to "Never expire"? If not, please ensure it "Never expire". 3)If this symbol still persists, could you please create a new account with the same privilege to test the result? Is there any error message in Event viewer?
