Hello, is the 2003 DC not demoted? If yes, run dcpromo to demote it and then change the name of the 2008 R2 server, join it to the domain and promote it. If not, have you used dcpromo /forceremoval to remove the 2003 DC? Have you just let it down without Demotion? If yes perform a metadata cleanup and change the name of the new DC. Another easy way to proceed is to perform a metadata cleanup, demote the 2008 R2 DC and promoting it with the name you want. The 2003 DC is not demoted just unplugged from the switch. I wanted to keep the old one on hand as a fall back in case bringing up the new 2008 DC failed.

If your goal is to keep the same name, my recommendation is to remove the old DC using DCPROMO first then perform a DCROMO on the new server. This is not possible to introduce DC with the name already existing DC just by shutting down existing DC. The reason is when you promote server as an DC, it writes so many entries in AD/DNS using its name & IP to provide AD related services either using hostname or IP address. If you just shutdown, it will be considered DC is already existsing & all other DC will try to sync the data using push/pull method & finally land up in error, if they can't locate it, so proper way is demoting to tell this DC is no more & promoting again to tell this is new DC. This is how AD works. You can take system state backup of AD for fallback option or else, you have to transfer all the services/roles from existing DC to another working healthy DC & then remove existing DC using dcpromo or dcpromo /forceremoval but forceremoval should only be used when normal demotion doesn't work as it requires metadata cleanup too. Once you remove the DC, you can't promote immediately another server as an DC using same hostName/IP, because i takes time to remove old records from AD database else, you need to remove manually esp from all the sub folder inside _msdcs folder in Dns, name server tab in DNS, server object from NTDS in ADSS, host records in dns etc.. If, there is reference of old AD existing in the AD/DNS, it will not allow you to promote new server as an DC using already used name/IP. why not reuse domain controller name or how to reuse DC name. http://thelaith.net/2010/05/05/why-not-to-re-use-dc-names/ Regards Awinish Vishwakarma| MY Blog Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS-IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

I would request to stick to single thread & problem only, else it will be difficult while replying to the thread using different thread for same issue. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservergen/thread/109039ce-0165-40ce-ae88-eec479387773 Regards Awinish Vishwakarma| MY Blog Disclaimer: This posting is provided AS-IS with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

Hello, you can't have 2 computers in a domain or workgroup with the same name, this is not possible. First one must be removed or you have to use another name. This has nothing to do with the rename process itself.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

You won’t able to introduce another Server/DC with same name. You need to decommission the old server first. If you have a technical or business reason to rename the DC, you can try one of the following methods: http://www.petri.co.il/windows_2003_domain_controller_rename.htm http://www.petri.co.il/rename-windows-server-2008-domain-controllers.htmSanthosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX Blogs - http://blogs.sivarajan.com/ Articles - http://www.sivarajan.com/publications.html Twitter: @santhosh_sivara - http://twitter.com/santhosh_sivara This posting is provided AS IS with no warranties, and confers no rights.
