net stop schedule access is denied

I have two scheduled tasks that say the status is "Ready" but the last run result is "The task is currently running".
I have attempted to end the tasks but the last run result does not change.
The tasks run batch files but the server has been restarted so none of the actual batch files or called programs are currently running.
This entire issue appears to be internal to the Task Schedule service and not related to any processes started by the Task Schedler.
I have attempted to end the Task Schedule service but all options are grayed out.
Logged in as a local machine administrator, from an administrator command line, I get "Access Denied" when I run "net stop schedule"
How do I stop the Task Scheduler when this happens?
