hello. When i follow kb937536 under step3 just before step 4 under the NOTE it says to "Make sure that you export the old EFS recovery agent certificate together with the private key to a .cer file" I ran the export twice and only get a .pfx file. can you tell me what may be wrong here please? - dale haisman ps - i am not very familiar with Microsoft forums - i looked at the titles and selected "general" - i freely admin that i may not be submitting my question to the proper place - please redirect me as necessary - hais

true - step2 created both. i am am referring to exporting the old recovery key and certificate - i follow the step 3 and the export file creates only a .pfx - it does not create a .cer file - does the .pfx contain both? if so why the reference to the .cer file? i read kb929103 as Milos recommended and it did not clear up the issue for me - except perhaps that it reminded me that a .pfx may contain a certificate and also a private key - but it did not explain why the .cer file was not there after the export of the old recovery key in step3 tks - dale

Hi pfx does contain both, you can extract cer from it (certificate manager by importing and exporting the required file, open tools,...) Regards Milos
