Hi My question is about Windows Update log files. If this is not the correct forum, please move it to appropriate one. In windows 2003, when we install any windows update (KBXXXXXX), a log file with same update KB name is created under c:\windows\ folder. On Windows 2008 and 2008 R2 installations, I do not see any log file for installed Windows Updates. Has the location been changed, or log files are not created anymore? thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, These files are not created in Windows Vista/Server 2008/7/Windows Server 2008 R2. Windows Vista/Server 2008/7/Windows Server 2008 R2 use a mechanism called Servicing to manage operating system components, rather than the INF-based installation methods used by previous Windows versions. Servicing operations are performed for the following actions: · Build operating system · Install, add, or remove operating system features · Install hotfixes or QFEs · Install Windows Update on the system CBS determines what needs to be installed and where it needs to be installed by reading the .manifest file for the component(s) from the %windir%\winsxs\manifests directory, which then checks for the package that the manifest requires in the %windir%/servicing\package folder. The GlobalInstallOrder.xml located in the %windir%\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-servicingstack_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_07289f4cca5f6990 directory is consulted for the order the components need to be installed so that the proper order is determined. For example, we no longer need to worry about the ordering of installation for QFEs other than specific updates such as the pre-requisites for Windows Vista SP1.
