Your reference to "show character" is just providing you with the ability to see what you are typing. Some WiFi password are really long and it is very frustrating when you have to type of 20, 30, ... characters and make a mistake if all you see is "*******************************". Therefore, if you enable "show chara..", you will be able to verify that what you typed is correct. This doesnt provide anyone trying to access your WiFi with the password you typed.
