error 80072EE6 when checking for updates

Hi, I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 box that shows an error when Checking for updates.

When I go to Windows update and push "Check for updates" I get a message saying:

Error(s) found: Code 80072EE6

I checked that download.windowsuodate.com is reachable

Any ideas?

Hi Gert_62

I was read a solucation about this error in an old thread, try this :

Click "Start"

Then Click "Run"

Copy and Paste this " regsvr32 MSXML3.dll "

Click "OK"

You should see a dialog box stating that the operation has suceeded.

Restart the computer

Hope that's helpful

Hi Liyin,

Thanx for your answer!

I came across the same post but since this is a Server 2008 R2 box with Hyper-V hosting a whole bunch of critical guest servers running on it I want to know what I'm doing by executing this command.

So do you know what this command does? What ddl am I registering? What is it doing? No other risk when doing that?

If it would have been a test box I would just try it. But in this case I'd rather not.

Hi,

I would do that but it was not shown in an eventlog. It's just a message that appears when you click on "Check for updates" in the Windows Update window.

The Windows Update message than says:
- "Windows Could not search for new updates".
- An error occured while checking for new updates for your computer.
- Error(s) found: Code 80072EE6 Windows Update encountered an unknown error

Btw I just found out yesterday when you choose the option "Check online for updates from Windows Update" in the same window it seems works fine.

Can anyone tell me what  "regsvr32 MSXML3.dll" exactely does and whether it is safe to do it on a production Hyper-V host?

Hi Gert_62

You just need post the relevant error log of Windows update

1Click Start, and then click Run.

2In the Open box, type windowsupdate.Log, and then click OK.

The msxml3.dll is a component file of MSXML3 library. You can try to reinstall it to fix this issuer

I tried installing MSXML 4.0 SP1 on the machine. But it didn't solve the issue.

Below you can find the log from today after I checked for update? I did a check for updates at 13:39. Below that I added a few other log lines before that as well.

Hi Gert_62

I notice that error recorder, looks like your server has been specified intranet Microsoft update service location, but it's seems a bad URL, try to configured it as “http(s)://AGR-SRV-WSUS/selfupdate/wuident.cab” and run "wuauclt /detectnow" again

Please reference the article below:

The “Specify intranet Microsoft Update service location” subsection

Hope that's helpful

Hi liyin,

I'm sorry but I haven't had the time to try it. It is set by a policy and I have to talk to a colleage to see what we can change about it. At least now I know that that is the reason for the errormessage. I wasn't aware of that before.

I'm a bit hesitant to just change the policy becuase se had a lot of problems with SPN registration on various servers. So I have to see how those relate. And read a bit more about what the SPN stuff is all about. Because I'm not familiar with it yet.

When I changed it and it works I will post a message. Thanks for your help.

This took me a while. But in the meantime I changed this update location in Windows update to what you suggested and the problem is solved.

Thanks a lot!

I had this error and applied the .dll update.  It didn't fix it. Turns out that the problem was even simpler than that. I noticed that when I tried to update antivirus databases that they weren't connecting.  I discovered that I failed to specify the default gateway in TCPIP.  Once I did that, no more error.

Hello,

that means you have to configure on the NIC properties the default gateway ip address. On your machine run in an elevated command prompt(RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR):

ipconfig /all

In the output you should see the default gateway ip address or none.
