doubt about requeriments - SQL - HDD
Hi guys. I wan't to relocate a public app developed by  myself and currently served by a traditional hosting.

The requirements are just the basics.
- Windows Server 2008 R2 or later
- minimal ram
- .net 2.0 and .net 4.0 support
- IIS
- SQL Server 2008
- Some 20gb, for the app, db, and files
- Some 10gb more (DB backup)

To solve this with windows azure I see two scenarios
1- Virtual Machines
2- Cloud Services

After this boring introduction my questions:

Do I need to add storage or this is included by default (https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/calculator/?scenario=data-management)?

If I choose add Sql Server Standard, this dbms could be installed in the same virtual machine or need to be installed in another machine? If is installed in another I must  to add an extra vm or it's included?

That's all. Sorry if the questions are extremely obvious, and sorry for my english.

Bye and thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for posting your question here!

Based on your requirements you can select either Virtual Machines or Cloud Services. For more information on this topic you may refer: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn197896.aspx

You can create a new virtual machine by using the per-minute paid SQL Server edition from the gallery and migrate your database files to this new virtual machine.

For instructions on Provisioning a SQL Server Virtual Machine on Azure and Getting Started with SQL Server in Azure Virtual Machines

When you create a Virtual Machine by default you will get a storage account, If you want to create manually then you can do that as well.

See this link for Virtual Machines Pricing

Let us know if you need any further assistance on this.

Best Regards

Sadiqh Ahmed

Thanks for the quick reply. Seeing more carefully, I see the default storage. For example a standard tier A0 has 20gb.

If I choose the vm method and install and image with sql server 2008 over windows server 2008 r2,

Can I serve the app from the same vm? (Web server + DBMS on the same machine).

This to reduce costs. Maybe later could be separated, but now, I can't do that.

However, when I see this page this say: VM= Temporary 70GB. (https://azure.microsoft.com/es-es/documentation/articles/virtual-machines-size-specs/)
Will be deleted the disk info  after shutdown?
Are you talking about this when you say "When you create a Virtual Machine by default you will get a storage account"?

Actually I'm interested this:

VM Method:

Standard tier: Windows VM A1 x 1
Standard tier: SQL Server Std A1 x 1
Bandwith: 5GB

With this config, Do you think will be enough to publish my web app developed over .net and interact with a db in sqlserver located in the same vm? or with my newbies knowledge about the cloud, Do I forget something?

I feel shame for be so annoying, but I still have those doubts.

You need to manually configure IIS. With that said, you can have Web Server and DBMS in the same VM.

Thanks for reply Mr Sadiqh. You're t/he best.

Now I'm understanding a little more. It's totally possible implement My config.

About the OS disk I think finally I'm understanding the idea after see this:

http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/pricing/details/storage/

Basically by default  we will have a disk of 130gb, but only will pay storage used. US $0.024 per GB in LRS mode. If I have 100gb (DB + app + backups) used we will pay US$2.4 per this concept in month. That's really cheap. (Please correct if i'm wrong)

Your understanding about default disk space and storage usage is right. However, I'm not the right person to give you exact information about pricing. You may log a support ticket for billing related assistance here - http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/support/options/ which is a free support.
