domain computers cannot connect to Windows SBS 2003
We have a Dell server with Windows Small Business Server 2003. Over the last few days, loading internet pages, especially picture-intensive pages, has slowed way down. After working with our service-provider and not getting anything resolved, I found the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357 and applied the fix to a Windows 7 Professional computer, and the result was successful, so I also tried to apply it to the server. I had downloaded and installed some updates earlier and it was waiting for a reboot, so I applied the fix and rebooted. As it came back up it displayed the following message: "One service or driver failed to load during startup." And then none of the computers could connect to the server after that. No file sharing, no QuickBooks. The Windows 7 computers can access the internet, but not the XP machines. The server itself has been trying to acquire a network address since the reboot and can't access the internet either. My question is, looking at the Event Viewer, there are lots of errors, like Events 1030 and 1041. I don't even know where to start to resolve this. I uninstalled all of the updates I had previously installed before the reboot and rebooted it again with the same error. Is there any way to restore the system back to this morning, when we *could* connect to it? Much thanks!Rochelle

That's what I can't figure out. It told me to go look at the event viewer but I wasn't sure where to look specifically. Under application errors, I'm getting events 1030 and 1058 from Userenv and 4314 from WINSCTRS. Rochelle

Have you looked at the services running on the server to determine which are running and which do not? Try sorting the services by "Startup Type", scroll to the Automatic types and check if the following have started: Computer Browser DHCP Client Server Workstation DNS Client Also try checking the Firewall settings. Hey your system log will show you the services that were not able to start during the windows start up process. Post your finding

Yes, all of those are running. In the list of automatic types, here are the ones which are NOT running: DNS Server Microsoft .NET Framework Performance Logs and Alerts Web Client WINS I have attached a screenshot of ipconfig /all. Thank you !Rochelle

Open DNS Management console and find the DNS record for the server :) (MDP-SBS) Administrative toolsDNSexpand forward lookup zonesexpand mdps.local zonelook for the name of the server in the right-hand column (MDP-SBS) The DNS primary server should be set to the same ip address. Hey do you have a dhcp server in your network? if you do it is working? if it is run the following commands, ipconfig /relaese after the release command run ipconfig /renew then run ipconfig /all if you dhcp server is working then your should get a valid ip address. you can also set the server with a static ip address and see if you can communicate with other machines on your network.

So I got a network guy in here to fix it up, and apparently that Microsoft fix I ran erased the server's static IP address, so none of the other computers knew how to connect to it. We disabled DHCP on the server and assigned the router to hand out IP addresses, found the server's own IP address and gave it back, and now everything is working again.
