cscript.exe application error
All, I have numerous Windows Server 2003 R2 application server installations. Typically the server will host SQL Server 2005, Operations Manager client for monitoring, AV and the norm. I am facing an issue whereby processes that call the internal compnent cscript are failing and the following error is being logged into the windows event log Application popup: cscript.exe - Application error: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142) The event then continues to appear after subsequent calls to the component. This is very damning to us as we use the cscript component is alot of our custom monitoring scripts, and the only way we have found to resolve this issue is to reboot the server, which can only can take outside of buisness hours, so we can potentially be blind to further issues for a whole trading day. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Craig Craig

Hi Craig, The event that you mention should contain more detail about the reason for the failure. The error text shoud be in this form: "Initialization of the dynamic link library %hs failed. The process is terminating abnormally", where "%hs" is the name of the module that is failing to load. Another investigation route would be to determine which script is failing and run it manually to find out which line in the script is failing. This will help pinpoint the problem. Thanks, John

John, The error does not give any further info. I don't believe the error is associated with a failing script as after the reboot the system may run fine for months. Also after the first error is seen, every time after that cscript is called the error is logged and no further scripts are executed of any kind using cscript. This not only affects the Operations manager app, but 2 other software applications installed on the server. Thanks for the steer though. Regards, Craig

Hi, It looks like the desktop heap is used up. That's also why the system runs fine for months after reboot. You can refer to the following article to troubleshoot the issue: 949296 Some SQL Server replication agents cannot run when you configure many replication agents to run on a server http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;949296This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.
