connect a machine from outside the network
I have a vista machine in my home which is not connected to my office network directly. I want to connect it to the office server which is Windows Server 2003. I don't have a router there in my office. I don't have a Static IP either. Can you give me the steps for establishing a connection.

hi vasim practically speaking this induces lot of threat when you are directly connecting between home server and office server, there might be hackers on the internet to spoof your id and induce virus / access your data. in order to avoid the above scenario microsoft/ cisco / any other networking vendor uses VPN connection for safe and secure connectivity. If you still want to connect to your server, your server should have a public ip address received from ISP and reachable / routable ip address, and then enable RDP on it . if you just want to access the server shares then enable the server service and workstation server on the server( by default they are set to start ) PS : your client should also have a way to ping the public ipof the server.sainath windows driver development.

To sainath Can we set a VPN between server and the home machine then we can connect them through internet. Do we need a router for a direct connection. Will it be more secure than direct connection. Can I set up a connection as mentioned in this http://compnetworking.about.com/od/vpn/ht/newvpnwindowsxp.htm will it work. Thanks, Vasim

Hello Vasim, Yes the Vpn server should be your office server andwho will take the incomming request from your home pc which will act as a vpn client. Please unserstand the prerequisites for VPN are Static IP from your ISP, Router and Internet Connection but in you scenario you only have internet. Yes it is secure than the direct connection.\Note: I recommended team viewer becasue you mentioned this " I don't have a router there in my office. I don't have a Static IP either. Can you give me the steps for establishing a connection. " Teamviewer doesnt needs all these things it just needs an internet connection. Thanks and I hope you understand.http://technetfaqs.wordpress.com

Thanks syed I understand. So we need a static IP address and a router to set up a VPN. I tried Team viewer and it works fine. Is there any disadvantage for this application , I mean any security issues.

WithTeam Viewer you can log on to only one computer where the application is installed, though you can access all the network creating rdp session to other computer which is quite tough and consumes lot of bandwidth and more over when ever you want to connect to the server you have to have that team viewer client. Now lets talk about VPN VPN client is builtin in all windows version no need to install add on tool to connect to your VPN server like team viewer.Team viewer doesnt suports all the protocols as MS supports like Chap, MSCHAP.If you compare VPN and Team Viewer. Then VPN is more secure than teamviewer. Thanks for Understandinghttp://technetfaqs.wordpress.com

Depends waht kind of security you are providing to send your files, you can always encrypt your files and send it over the internet."I want to know whether people will be able to hack these files or not"There are daily security breaches over the internet so its pretty hard to tell that its safe to send. Lets assume that todayI said its safe and tomorrow a security breach comes then what ? Thankshttp://technetfaqs.wordpress.com
