cannot write to cd or dvd
In device manager I can see both my usb attached cd and built-in dvd and device manager report they are working. In 'my computer' I see the devices but not the media in the devices. I am running server 2003 on a dell poweredge 500SC. It is configured as a file server and it is for home use. Can anyone tell me why I cannot write to the media in these drives?R. Miller Jr.

From what I know of the Dell 500SC specs, the original CD drive is a CD-ROM, not a CD-RW... If you DO have a CD or DVD writable hardware then you must: Go to the Services applet in Administrative Tools (or click Start, then Run, and type "services.msc" (without quotes) and click OK). Find the "IMAPI CD-burning COM" service, right-click and select Properties, select "Automatic" instead of "Disabled" in the startup type box. Start the service

At this point I have replaced the original DVD-ROM. However I am still having the same problem with my USB attached CD-RW drive. When I right click on the drive in 'my computer' and click 'open', I get the message 'I:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function' I started the 'IMAPI CD-burning com' service. Can anyone help?R. Hi, Please perform the following steps to troubleshoot this issue: Step 1: If you have installed any CD-burning software, please temporarily remove them from "Control Panel"-> "Add/Remove Programs". Step 2: Modify the Registry: 1. Click "Start"->"Run", type in "regedit" (without quotation marks) and click "OK". 2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} Highlight this key, on the right pane, and then check if the "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" values are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them. Note: please right click this key, choose "Export" and save it as a backup first. Step 3: Remove the CDROM driver: 1. Click "Start", go to "Run", type "devmgmt.msc" and press "Enter". 2. Expand "DVD/CDROM Drives". 3. Right click your CDROM Drive, and click "Uninstall".
