can't see contents of .DAT file with notepad on win server 2008
existing batch file on PC running win nt 4.0 does a file copy/rename to a shared location on a win server 2008 folder. The copied/renamed file has a .DAT extension (which could be previously opened with Notepad when copied to a Win 2000 server folder) that is required/used by a properietary utility to import contents of .DAT file into a custom application SQL DB. Though the batch file copy/rename does produce the file with an appropriate file size at the destination location (matching file size at origin), when opened with Notepad @ destination, it is blank. As mentioned, when this was previously executed to a WIN 2000 server folder, it worked just fine. Is there some restriction within WIN 2008 server that prevents .DAT file contents from being viewed?

What about opening Notepad, "run as administrator", then open the file. Are there any security restrictions on the file? Can you open it from the 2000 server over the network? I had a similar problem with a Word 2003 problem in the past but do not recall exactly if it was resolved.

thanks Charlie - did look at BAT file again - noticed a slight error on my part re: the rename during the copy - made that adjustment & VOILA! - it worked - always the 'little' things eh? :) Devil is in the details
