can't run windows server 2008 r2 updates
Hi,
In addition, we can perform the following troubleshooting suggestions to troubleshoot the Windows Update issue:
Suggestion 1: Disable Windows Update service, rename the folder %windir%\SoftwareDistribution and restart the Windows Update
service.
Suggestion 2: If some files cannot be repaired by System Update Readiness Tool automatically, you may replace them manually.
For more information, please refer to the following Microsoft KB and TechNet article:
Advanced guidelines for diagnosing and fixing servicing corruption
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee619779(WS.10).aspx
Suggestion 3: If some corrupted files cannot be repaired by System File Checker, you may manually replace them. For more information,
please read the following Microsoft KB article:
How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Suggestion 4: Perform an In-Place upgrade to repair the whole system.

1. Click Start and click Administrative
Tools. Select Services.
2. Find Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS) and Windows Update service. Stop the two services.
3. Restart the server.
4. Rename the SoftwareDistribution
folder to SoftwareDistribution.Old under C:\windows\.
5. Start Windows Update and BITS
services.

Running Win Server 2008 r2 64 bit as virtual server on vmware esx 4.1. Have a handful of virtual servers all set up the same way. All will take the windows updates just fine, but have one rogue server.
I click on the updates and it says "downloading and installing" but just sits there pretending to do something for days... never gets past 0% complete.
I've done restarts, I get internet and network fine, I've enabled Internet Explorer ESC for all users, windows activated, I can run apps and everything no problem. I've tried to download just one update at a time, no dice.
Funny thing is it took updates at one point--now it does not.
Running Avast antivirus server edition (on al my vm's so that shouldn't be the problem).
Any other ideas?
Hardware is IBM x3650 M2 Servers, xeon e5530 2.4 ghz cpu, vm has 4 gb of ram.

Have you checked in the event log on that server to see if there are any errors coming up from when you try to do the install? If you look at the c:\windows\windowsupdate.log file and scan through the entries from the time you started the download / install
process are there any entries that indicate a problem, or for that matter that the download has at least completed and the installation begun?

Hello,
try proceeding like that:
Run chkdsk /r /f and sfc /scannow Reset Windows Update Components Download and install system update readiness tool for your OS Disable all security softwares and check again
If this does not help, download and install the updates manually.
If the problem persists then perform an in-place upgrade of your OS.
