How important are operations masters?

The operations master are imperative for the proper operation of Active Directory. However, some myths surrounding these functions rank because of this. So here are a few more notes.

  • If one or more of the operations master functions are not available, AD will work properly in the long term. The aspect "in the long run" is important here: If this function only a short time is offline, this poses a problem in almost any situation.
  • The failure of an operations master DC represents so no reason to the hustle and bustle! There are plenty of time to assess the situation and make the next steps.
  • The operations master functions generate no significant additional load on the servers in large environments. It is not necessary for it to be "bigger" server hardware.
  • For this reason, there is a reason to distribute the operations master roles on multiple DCs in almost any environment. It has become the recommendation, to leave the FSMO roles on the DC where they are originally, as long as this server out of service goes.
From Windows-2000 times there as it is intended to distribute the roles yet recommendations. These recommendations will no longer work fine (they were too high under attack already running Windows 2000 for almost all environments).
  • It is however important to limit administrative access to operations master functions. This actually applies to all administrative functions, in particular when they relate to AD.

What if an operations master fails?

The DC one should (or better: more than one) holds operations master roles, fail, so the most important thing is: keep calm. Essentially, we need to distinguish between two situations.

  1. Is it a temporary problem?
If the problem predictably to remedy is within a few days, you need simply to do nothing to repair the failed server. All normal operations within the AD Administration continue undeterred: login, manage permissions, create new objects. The essentials, which no longer walks: Domains creating new (but how many times to do that already?) and the schema editing (what happens not more frequently). In exceptional cases it may be, that you will no new security objects (users, groups, computers) create more can (because no new RIDs are more free), but this occurs only after multiple 100 new objects - not within also this should be the case in most environments only a few days.
Once the FSMO role holder is back online, all operations work again.
  2. Is it a permanent problem?
Is foreseeable that the failed server can go back online - such as a complete hardware damage - so it is planned the transfer of the FSMO roles to one of the other DCs in peace. The actual process is described in the above linked article.
After the transfer of roles on a different DC to remove the "dead" old DC from the AD (Windows 2008 it is sufficient to delete the computer object in "Active Directory users and computers").
Important: Now, you must make sure that the failed DC never again go online even after a possible repair to the network. Must you boot up the machine yet again, to save some data, so to do this without a network connection to the ADThe hardware is repaired, so you delete the hard drive and reinstalled Windows - only then the server may have contact with the AD again

Hi raveena-tandon,

>> After installation ADC FSMO roles will install automatically? if yes how many roles are installing during installation of ADC

During installation of Active Directory on a Windows Server all FSMO roles will automatically be installed on the first server. You could also check FSMO roles.

The easy way is to type in the command line with:

Netdom/query FSMO

Hi raveena-tandon,

When the Active Directory Installation Wizard (Dcpromo.exe) creates the first domain in a new forest, the wizard adds five FSMO roles. As I mentioned before, FSMO roles will automatically be installed on the first server during installation.

And you could also read the article to do the FSMO placement in a forest.

Thanks i understand PDC (root domain or first domain controller in the forest will having 5 FSMO roles by default) my question was if I install ADC in a forest if any FSMO roles will be installed default?

Hi raveena-tandon,

The FSMO roles are installed on the first DC by default. If you just add the additional domain controller to the exist domain, there is no roles in the ADC by default. You can also transfer FSMO roles from primary domain controller to additional domain controller.
