XP Clients Cannot Access Server 2008 Shares
This is the situation: We replaced our Windows Server 2003 boxes with Server 2008 64 bit at all of our school locations. Since school has started in August our XP clients, at random times are unable to access the shares from the 2008 servers. In order for the clients to regain access to the shares, we have to restart the 2008 server. It is not always the same server. Some servers have never had problems, while some have problems daily, while others are only occasionally. Symptoms: XP clients cannot access the shares on the 2008 servers. Vista clients (which we only have 13) and from another 2008 server can run to the shares and access the shares. After the failure and before the restart we can remote to the 2008 servers. We can ping the 2008 servers by name and by IP from any client. We see nothing in the event logs pointing to any failures with the system. Our setup: We have four DC/DNS Servers. Two are 2003 and two are 2008. One of the DC/DNS servers is one that often needs restarting. We have around 50 servers total, 13 of them being Server 2008. The others are 2003. All of the 2008 servers are identical with hardware, operating system, service packs and services. Things we have tried on the 2008 servers: Removed Symantec End Point 11. Reinstalled only the Anti-Virus Protection. We have updated Symantec Endpoint to 11 with maintenance pack 2. Enabled the Computer Browsing Service and set it to automatic. When the 2008 server fails, we have flushed the DNS and re-register the DNS. Updated NIC drivers.

Hi,The problem is solved in Symantec Endpoint Protection11 M3. The problem is a known issue with SEP prior to M3 release.Jens Ole Kragh MCITP, MCTS, MCT http://jensolekragh.spaces.live.com/

Hi,I can see that some people still have problems with M3 on Windows Server, so try the newest build from Symantec. It might help you ;-)https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?board.id=endpoint_protection11&thread.id=19295Jens Ole Kragh MCITP, MCTS, MCT http://jensolekragh.spaces.live.com/

Sorry for beingdisenchanting - but this issue is stillnot resolved, see this thread on the Symantec forums:https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?board.id=endpoint_protection11&thread.id=17434That's why I kicked SEP off my Win Server 2008/64bit and am testing another software - without any glitch so far.Michael
