Write Data NTFS Permissions DOESN'T WORK!
I have seen this before a long time ago but couldn't be bothered investigating it at the time. Now though I need to impelment it for a client and want to get to the bottom of the issue. The special NTFS permission of "write data" doesn't work on files, at least how MS claims anyway: Create Folders/Append Data The Create Folders permission applies only to folders and allows or denies the user from creating folders in the folder. The Append Data permission applies only to files and allows or denies the user from making changes to the end of the file but not from changing, deleting, or overwriting existing data . This is from two of the MS links I found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308419 and http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727008.aspx. in fact the same quote is all over the Internet but it doesn't work. I have just set the following special permissions to a bitmap file. Inheritence turned off and allow system full control administrator has read data, write data, read perms, change perms, take ownership. I open the file fine then scribble something on it in paint then go to save and it says access denied!!?? Anyone know how it really works?? And why do MS insist on keeping this information incorrect? What is strange is that if I give the permission append data and write data it works.

I also did the same test as yours. It seems that the "existing data" means the whole file, which means it will not affect changing file name, deleting the file or overwriting it, but will affect modifying contant of the file. Of course I agree that the words here is not exactly correct and causing confusion.TechNet Subscriber Support in forum |If you have any feedback on our support, please contact tnmff@microsoft.com.
