Windows server network authentication issue
Hi Jorge, To get a better understanding, please help to clarify the following questions: 1. How did you protect the sharing folders/files by password? Is this the password that you want users to use to access the sharing? 2. What error message did users receive when trying to open the protected sharing? Meanwhile, the following articles might be helpful for you: Shared Folders http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc770406.aspx Managing Permissions for Shared Folders http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753731.aspx Regards, Bruce

thanks alot for your reply. the whole scenario is as follows. there is only the admin and two users created on the server and there is a shared folder. the server is visible on the network but clicking on it from a networked computer or entering its static IP address, the server does not request for username and password but gives the following error. cannot access \\10.0.0.200 You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer Now since there are several files in the server that needs to be accessed by the users on the network it forces me to disable password protected sharing in the Network and sharing enter, but this allow anyone who is not authorised to be able to access the files in the shared folder as well I appreciate. thank u.

Hallo, I have a newly acquired windows server 2008 R2 installed in the office. we have no domain configured yet but we work from a shared folder in the server which also runs a terminal application. Now of late i discovered that whenever password protected sharing is enabled on the server, network users cannot reach the server and it gives an error without asking for login password. in case password protected sharing is disabled anyone is able to access the server which creates a security breach. please help. Jorge

Hi Jorge, Thanks for your reply. Currently, please run the following steps in cmd to enable guest accounts on the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer: Net user guest /active:yes Then, click Start menu –> Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> User Rights Assignment. Then double click "Access this computer from the network" and check that EVERYONE is added to the list. If not, add it. After that, please check if the problem continues. Meanwhile, on the client computer from which you want to access the sharing folder, you can create the same username and password as the Windows Server 2008 R2 has. After that, logon use this user on the client and try to access the password protected sharing folder. Regards, Bruce

Can you try accessing your server by disabling the Guest account also? Disable the guest account, then go to file sharing settings, see if password protected sharing is turned on. Now access the share and it should ask you for password. Thanks
