Windows server 2003 R2 Home setup
Are you making it a domain controller? If so you don't want it to be multi-homed as this causes all sorts of issues. So must have all but one network interface disabled and don't install VPN/RRAS on a DC. Regards, Dave Patrick .... There is really no need for two NICs in the server if you have an ADSL modem/router. The server can sit on the LAN just like the clients and access the Internet just as they do. There is no point in making the server do the job that the router can do itself (or doing it twice). You can configure RRAS as a VPN server with only one NIC. But as Dave said, do not make it a DC if you want to run it as a remote access server or any sort of router. Bill

Hi, ok that sounds good, So ok ill leave the VPN / Remote out for now, So ill just go a head and make my slim server an account server. i did try last night using vmware create a server and installed xp as well, followed a video off YouTube, But after connecting xp to the server and logging into the account, xp would not connect to the internet, i tried everything that i could think of on the server under accounts But as im new to this had no success!!!!! So i still have my slim server already and waiting for setup, leaving that until i get great instructions and on how to setup the server to hold accounts and how to setup the 1st nic, and how to connect my pc's to it (Win7Professional on most,1Xp Pro), and then how to get the pc's to access the internet through the server, Basically need an account from the server to use the internet, Cheers guys. adam

Hi, Just tought, instead of giving the server a static ip address, cant i just go to the router and in the dhcp settings hold the ip address in it. that way the router wont ever change that ip address? Would that still work?

DC/DNS server should always have static network settings. Regards, Dave Patrick .... Microsoft Certified Professional Microsoft MVP [Windows] Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.
