Windows explorer doesn't find files
Hi, I'm (still) running win2000 and suddenly I don't see my icons anymore. This happens everywhere where win2000 opens a window like filemanager, control panel, network settings etc. The icon in the top right corner keeps spinning and although there are files or icons in the directory (I'm sure !) the name(s) etc are not given in the panel. In SAFE mode, all icons, file names etc are visible but NOT in normal mode. Any idea ? -ben

Try creating a new user. It sounds like it could be a profile issue. I would be interest to hear if the icons are present in the new profile.

Control Panel|Display|Appearance|Advanced and try changing the icon size by one, apply changes, then go back in and change the size back. This should cause the operating system to rebuild the shelliconcache file which may be in a corrupted state.Regards,

Hi Ben,
Is there any softwares installed before this happens? As you mentioned, in safe mode, everything is working.
To isolate the root cause, you may need to perform a clean boot on the server.
To perform a clean boot, please follow the steps here:
a.Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility.
b. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click Disable All (if it is not gray).
c.Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
d. Restart your computer. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the box and click "OK".
If its working under system clean boot, you may try enable the other Services ONE BY ONE to address which service caused the issue.
Best Regards,
Wilson Jia
