Recently Windows has not started without me starting it from the security centre usually after a few tries. Now it won't start at all. I have recently installed Microsft Security Essentials."Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x800106ba. A problem caused this program's service to stop. To start the service restart the computer or search help and Support on how to start a service manually."I am unable to restart manually via the Security Centre or undertaking a computer "Restart".(The only program files under Vista Home Premium - Vista (C): Programs Windows Defender. File version 1.1.1600.0. I have all the latest Vista updates on my system. Downloading them is not a problem.)Can this problem be resolved. Do I need Windows Defender now that I have Microsoft Security Essentials? Any help would be appreciated.

Microsoft Security Essentials should disable Windows Defender on Vista. In some cases, this does not happen automatically. Then, you should disable it to prevent conflicts. Windows Defender cannot be uninstalled from Vista. For more information, please refer to the this thread:

Thank you for your early response.Without Windows Defender there is no access to start programs (in detail). I have to use other “free software” with less detail facilities.The problem threw up an additional issue. When I was repeatedly trying to activate WD the system came up with “Windows host process (Rundll32) has stopped working”. You're missing one of WintersDay's original points and that is if he/she disables Windows Defender how is he/she supposed to change the status of any programs he/she may or may not want to start automatically with Windows. I have the same problem and without
Defender running I am stuck with a casino program that starts automatically and when it does it tries to update itself as well. This makes for a very long boot up. I'm tired of it and you're suggesting disabling the only application that I know can fix this
issue. This is totally unacceptable!!!
