Windows Update Failing on 2008 R2
This server just started having a problem with windows update. It will also not allow a manual installation of SP1 or .NET framework 3.5.1. Below are the results in the CheckSUR.log. It seems to point to a problem with .NET framework, but I can't figure
out how to fix it. Server manager is also producing an error when selecting Roles or Features. Any help would be appreciated.
Server Manager Error:
Unexpected error refreshing Server Manager: No signature was present in the subject. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800B0100)

Hello,
as I see you have corrupt files.
Performing an in-place upgrade of your OS should solve your problem.

Thanks for your reply. Is there no solution to this other than an in-place upgrade? I was hoping to find a way to replace the corrupt files. Or is it the nature in which the files are corrupted prevent this?

Start by what Dave posted. If it does not help, proceed by the in-place upgrade.

Thanks Dave. This was helpful. Renaming the mum and cat files didn't work, but replacing the files mentioned in the report with new versions from the cab cleared the errors in the CheckSUR.log and fixed the Server Manager. Below are the most recent results
in the CheckSUR.log. I was also able to successfully install SP1 and all of the .NET 3.5.1 updates. However, I still have 5 updates that refuse to install and I'm not exactly sure why. I've done the whole delete SoftwareDistribution and Windows Update registry
key, but these same 5 still refuse to install. Below is also a recent snip of WindowsUpdate.log. I'm not exactly sure what portion would be most helpful. If there something else, let me know and I'll see if I can find it in the log.

Glad to hear the server manager is fixed.
I think the problem line is;
2011-06-27 19:05:12:117 7584 1194 Handler FATAL: CBS called Error with 0x800f081f,
From this article below.
"If you have a Windows 2008 R2 Server installation that is getting the 0x800f081f error code then you are not hitting the RSAT tools issue. You have a source file missing somewhere that is causing the issue. I would recommend running the latest version of
CheckSUR against the installation first to see if you have a missing or corrupted source file of some sort first. Otherwise, we'd need to look over your logs to see what else is going on. You can either open a post on the newsgroups or an issue with Microsoft
support if you need assistance."

Someone from MSFT is going to need to chime in. I'm not seeing it.

OK, it looks like this is resolved. I manually downloaded and installed the 5 updates that had errors. I tried this once, before replacing the mum, cat and manifest files and it didn't work. I guess I never thought to try it again after fixing the Server
Manager.
What I find puzzling.., If it's just a matter of all the source files not being available, then why did deleting the SoftwareDistribution and Windows Update registry key which should have forced new downloads of these updates not work? I was always under
the impression, that this should reset Windows Update and any previously downloaded updates forcing new downloads. Oh well, I guess it's the mystery that is Windows Update.
