Windows Update Error 80072ee2
Hi there,I have problems using "Windows Update" or "Microsoft Update". Error is 80072ee2. The OS is "Windows Server 2003 R2 x86 with slipstreamed SP2". The server was fresh installed, the only additional software installed is "VM Ware Tools" and KB923845 (MSI 4.5). no WSUS, no PROXY, all DNS-Caches flushed (there is a DC with DNS and no DNS-Forwarders configured)I have tried to fix this by searching Microsoft.com and the rest of the web since 26 hours. nothing works. so please help if there are any ideas. I've also tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/en-us and deleted C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution.here is the log:2010-02-05 17:26:20:590 808 de0 Misc =========== Logging initialized (build: Hello, I know how frustrating this problem can be, I've been chasing a solution for the past 32 hours - and with a brand new laptop to boot! Two days ago I bought a Dell Latitude E5510 with Windows 7 Profession 32-bit version. As mentioned above, apparently, for some people it helps to uninstall (or even delete) their NIC card and reboot and the OS will reinstall it. I tried that but it didn't work for me. Finally, I resorted to restoring the system image that resided in the partition Dell had created. Once again the updates failed! This was the culprit - a corrupt system image. So I deleted the partition with the corrupt OS, installed Windows 7 manually with the help of the Dell technician and now the updates are working just fine! I sure would like Dell to know that they are pushing out machines with a corrupt image, and they will by Monday - for now I'm just playing catch up and reinstalling all the software on this machine again! I hope this helps other people.

I think your corrupted OS image is a red herring. What I've found is that this problem happens on Dell PC's that have Trend Micro pre-installed. I've seen this on four new Dell systems. Everything runs fine, uninstall Trend Micro, and BAM, no updates. I've tried several fixes and can never get the updates back. I've even tried reinstalling Trend Micro and still get no updates. Finally I just give up and reinstall the OS. I'm currently working to save my new Alienware laptop from a similar fate, but am losing hope. Of course, this system came with Trend Micro as well, which I uninstalled, and now I get no updates.

Excellent solution that is much quicker/safer than a reinstall from scratch. Worked for me too first try. Did not require reboot, only a retry of the update after the registry key was deleted. Similar to others, my issues were on a "new" Dell laptop - Window 7 Ultimate on Latitude E4310.

I found the fix for my Alienware laptop!! I went into the registry and found: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU "UseWUServer"=dword:00000001 I deleted the entry for UseWUServer (at first I just tried setting it to 0, but no dice) and restarted the system. Now my updates work just fine :) I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium. Very helpful thanks. Worked on my new Dell Vostro that I got yesterday.

FANTASTIC!! Thank you very much for this post on the registry fix. I had been going round and round with Dell on my M6500 (refurbished) machine, they wanted to re-install windows but I just knew somebody out there could do it without a complete re-install. Bravo!!

This fixed the problem for me: 1). Click Start, Run, type "cmd" (Without the quotation) and press Enter. 2). In the opened window, type: "ipconfig /flushdns" (Without quotations) and press Enter. Thanks!

What would one do if there is no entry for \WindowsUpdate\AU. I have string that reads "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows" but it ends there, no \WindowsUpdate\AU. I am using Windows 7 Utimate, new install

I just thought i'd share my solution as this has been driving me and the guys at work crazy for a week now. Before i continue i should also mention we tried absolutely everything we could and exhausted all solutions offered through various google searches. The OS in question is Win 7 HP x64 Basically the desktop PC in question would update with a wireless card we installed but when switching to the onboard LAN for updating it kicked up the 80072ee2 error. This was confirmed by fully updating the system wirelessly and then removing several successfully installed updates before trying to reinstall them over a LAN connection which failed everytime. We also tried multiple reinstalls on the same PC before trying a new HDD with a copy of windows preinstalled from another machine in the office. This new HDD worked absolutely fine which was confusing so we then went back to the original HDD and did a full format using DBAN and then reinstalled windows and the error disappeared. I hope this helps

Was having this issue with a fresh install. Found your post after searching through all the other reinstalls and fixes. I was running updates off the wireless, read your post and turned off wireless so would just use the NIC and it was fixed. Windows update worked instantly. May help someone else with my same issue. Thanks.
