Windows Sever update problem
I have a Windows Server 2008R2 box which is currently having windows update issues. In case it makes any difference the box is half of an Exchange 2010 DAG. At the weekend there were 9 patches outstanding which I tried to install, the Update stalled when it got to downloading 7 out of 9 patches, when it had been stuck at this point for an hour I decided to reboot the box, the reboot cycle then also stopped at patch 7 out of 9 I then left the box for 2 hours but again it didn't finish the update and I was forced to power cycle. The box did come back up again and the patches still show as outstanding however now the download does not even start. At this point the windows update service cannot be stopped (it just hangs at stopping) and the only way I have found to restart it is by killing it's svchost process. I have tried reregistering the windows update and BITS dll's listed in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 I have tried removing the windows\software distribution folder this does improve things marginally in that it now starts downloading the available patches but it stops at 28.4mb 6% Providing I force stop the windows update service I can install the patches manually but is this just going to re-surface again next time I need to run updates. Patches are as follows: 978542 979309 979683 980232 974431 4 X Bext practice analyser updates Any help greatly appreciated

Further info: 980232 installed manually fine, however when I try and install 979683 the installer states: Initializing installation... done! Installing Security Update for Windows (KB979683) (update 1 of 1)... Then hangs.... An extreme answer would be to wipe and reload. If it is production server, that usually is not an (easy) option. I had a similar issue a long time ago, finally opened a support ticket with Microsoft to get resolved. It required a bunch of DLL's to be re-registered if I remember correctly. Good luck. James

Hi Brett, It seems that there are 2 issues: 1. Windows Update stopped working and we cannot restart the services. 2. update KB979683 cannot be installed. The update KB979683 can be downloaded from following link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=28389C1D-2A12-4BEF-A59B-726BB6449C8B&displaylang=en Please save the update to Drive C, boot the computer to Safe Mode and test to install the update again. If still failed, please write down the error message or capture a screenshot (if there is an error message but not just hang). Meanwhile, please also help collect following 2 log files: 1. Click the "Start" Button. 2. In the "Search bar", please input: %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and press enter 3. Now click on the "File" menu and then click on the "Save As". 4. From the left panel, click "Desktop" and click on the Save button. Note: If you do not have permission to copy it, you may need to take ownership of the file first. 5. Go to windows folder, find WindowsUpdate.log. 6. Send the 2 log files to me. Here are the steps to upload a picture. You can upload the information files to the following link. Thanks for the reply, I have in the meantime atcually solved the issue myself. For the benefit of others here's how Ran the system update readiness tool on the server and checked the resulting logfile, it mentioned that two MUM and CAT files were corrupted and could not be replaced. I copied these over from another server and that fixed the issue. Regards Brett
