Windows Server Trial Limitations.

Hello Everyone,
After calling Microsoft Support and hearing that they dont have this information I decided to consult a real specialist. You guys here.
I have two servers running WS2008 Trial version, also have around 50 people connecting to these servers using shared folders, printers and also a ERP application running in it. I have several issues like, DNS not working (people can only find the server
using IP and sometime the name works, but most of the time it does not), also people get disconnected very often and the biggest problem is the ERP application, when there is too many people acessing it the connection just fails. Haaa, also there is the problem
of permissions not working correctly.

So, basically if I can somehow show the people in the project that the Trial version is really causing most of the problems here I can get them to buy the WS 2008 licenses. but if this has notting to do with DNS problem or connection issues then we
will use trial until the end of the 120days.

Any ideas? I have just started with WS2008 so forgive me if nothing that I said makes sence. Let me know if more information is needed.

Regards

Hello,
There should be no problem due to the fact that it is a trial version as it will work as a non-trial one.
For DNS issues, you have to make sure that your servers are registring correctly their DNS records and that client computers are pointing to your internal DNS servers as primary and secondary DNS servers. Once done, run
ipconfig /flushdns and check results. Note also that, depends of how your environment is setup, you may need to add static records like for split-DNS.
Note also that you have to check that there is no connectivity issues and that there is no security softwares in use which may be the cause of that.
For questions related to your application, you have to ask its developer Technical Support.

Also be aware that you'll need to reinstall them at end of evaluation. Looks like it may be possible to activate trial but is unsupported. The time bomb timer could reappear at any time.

Thank you for replying Mr. X.
So, i you are saying and no one else said different then perhaps there is no difference Trial vs Full right. I will have to do more troubleshoot then lol, I was hoping that someone would agree with me, but well.
Thank you very much.

Yes, I see no point on trial mode for a company that already know that their OS will be WS2008. Will have more trouble to install everything again. -.-''.

But thanks for the reminder.

Hello,
1st is, that TRIAL is NOT for production environments. At the end of trial you MUST reinstall with non-evaluation disks:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2021579

Question: Can you convert the evaluation version to a full version?

Answer: Although this conversion is not blocked, we do not support an upgrade from an evaluation version to a full version or changing the product key to a full version key. To upgrade to a full version, you must install non-evaluation media. If you
change the product key to Full Version, the visual evaluation references in Winver and as displayed in Slmgr /DLV output are removed, but the WLMS service remains on the system and the media retains its evaluation status.
2nd is, that all trial versions are FULLY running and there is NO difference to the retail versions.
3rd is, that connectivity problems with DNS mostly belong to misconfigured settings and not to DNS or the used software. Therefore let's start with an unedited ipconfig /all from the DC/DNS servers and a client machine having problems to connect.

Thank you! I see what you mean. Ive probably missed some configuration on the server side since all machines are configured to have the server as DNS.

I guess I will have this topic as concluded for now since you all are saying that there is no difference in the trial mode and the full version.
Thanks all for the great help and for spending some time to reply to this topic.
