Windows Server 2012 Print Server Relocate Question

Hi,

I have Windows Print services (printer sharing) installed on one of my Active Domain Server.  Now that we are getting 2 more server I intent to move the print services to a Hyper-V guest windows 2012 server on one of the new server.   How can I move the print services with minimum disruption to print services (20 shared printers across 4 office floors)?.

Any pointers would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hello,

This domain controller is a 64-bit OS server ? If no,  you should add printer driver in 64-bit version for your printer before migration. On windows 2012 after install "print and Document services" you have a "Print Management" tool that you use to migrate. In this tool add your old print server and export printers to a file and next on your new server you import this file.  The same can do from Command Line using the command PrintBrm.exe. Commandlocationis%windir%\system32\spool\tools

You need to delete all connections and re-install them.   Delete all is pretty simple, you can use GPP Printers to do so, con2prt.exe (Reskit NT4 ;-) or just delete HKCU\Printers\Connections   Mark -- Mark Heitbrink - MVP Windows Server - Group Policy   Homepage: http://www.gruppenrichtlinien.de - deutsch GPO Tool: http://www.reg2xml.com - Registry Export File Converter

Hi,

Does that mean that the current installed printer on the client (windows 7 and 8) will be invalidated by the move process?

Hi,

In another words, there will be mayhem when the print server is moved from one server to another even on the same server OS version level and in an AD environment?  Thanks.
