Windows Server 2012 Networking IPv6 Recommendations
We've been turning off IPv6 for a very long time now, the internet is littered with articles on how to do it. As we begin to roll out 2012 servers I'd like to know if this is still supported? I've heard from some that turning off ipv6 on 2012 is bad with no additional information other than that. Which is why I'm asking here. If I disable ipv6 on Windows Server 2012 will all the features and roles continue to function? are there things i should be aware of prior to turning it off? thanks! Jeffrey S. Patton Jeffrey S. Hi, Thank you for the post. If I disable ipv6 on Windows Server 2012 will all the features and roles continue to function? - It depends on whether you have used ipv6 traffic in your network environment. as far as I understand, IPv6 has been fully supported by us since Vista & 2008 days, and it was supported in many Microsoft products: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/network/hh994905.aspx. For more information about IPV6, please refer to the following link: IPv6 - Technology Overview http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh831730 Regards,Nick Gu - MSFT

Hi Nick, Thanks for the reply, but my question is not about ipv6 being supported. We've heard that if we turn off ipv6 in windows server 2012 that the server will stop functioning for some core services. I don't have any more info than that, so my question was, does microsoft recommend NOT turning off ipv6 for windows server 2012, or is that a nasty rumor that we've heard?Jeffrey S. Patton Jeffrey S. I thought that had been Microsoft's position for a long time. There were a few specific cases where IPv6 caused a problem and disabling it was recommended, but I was not aware of any blanket recommendation from Microsoft to disable IPv6. Too many things rely on it now, especially in the client OS. Bill

I'm not really looking for blanket recommendation to disable, more like here are the reasons why it must remain enabled.Jeffrey S. Patton Jeffrey S. Patton Systems Specialist, Enterprise Systems University of Kansas 1001 Sunnyside Ave. Lawrence, KS. 66045 (785) 864-0242 | http://patton-tech.com

Hi, Thank you for the update. The reason why you should enabled ipv6 relied on your network topology as I said, if you have an IPV6 capable infrastructure and you should use IPv6 protocols for system-to-system communication. Regards,Nick Gu - MSFT
