We are in the process of completing and enforced and unwanted move to W2012. It's way too complicated. We appear to have overcome most hurdles with the simplest of default configurations (no domain).

The dashboard is reporting an exception KDC PROXY SERVER SERVICE - STATUS STOPPED - START TYPE AUTOMATIC 

When we go to Services and try to start it we get the message...

WINDOWS COULD NOT START THE KDC PROXY SERVER SERVICE ON LOCAL COMPUTER. ERROR 50 THE REWUEST IS NOT SUPPORTED.

We have searched for information on this message but found none. We checked the dependencies and noted that the PRC Service was indeed running and the HTTP Service we can't find. However we note that HTTP Logging, Errors, Redirection & Common Features are all installed in IIS  which is running.

QUESTION

If we disable it, the Dashboard Alerts are cleared out. Do we need this service?

KDC - Kerberos Key Distribution Center - is something new in 2012 that is used with domains.  It sounds like you have opted to go without domains.  In that case, you end up managing security on your own that would generally be handled by Kerberos.  But if you do not have a domain, you do not need KDC.

Sorry to hear that you think moving to 2012 was too complicated.  Without more information we won't be able to help in that area, but it should not have been difficult to move from 2008, or even 2003, though 2003 would have required a bit more work.  Windows makes it pretty easy to upgrade to the next rev level.

you can move old servers to virtual machines too

Upgrade from W2008 to W2012 does not work. We tried four times. It goes through the entire process, gets the to W2012 logon screen and when we enter a password it responds with "This version of windows cannot be installed on this computer" (or similar - we has lost the will to live by that time) and recovers W2008.

In general Windows 7/2008 increased the Fighting My Computer/Doing Productive Work for my Business ratio to 85/15. Windows 8/2012 achieves a staggering 95/5.

I am seriously considering going back to pens and ledgers (PS Been an IT professional for 43 years).
