Windows Server 2008 to 2008 R2 upgrade hangs at transferring files, settings, and programs
I've checked this post (http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsserver2008r2general/thread/c9ba66a1-1a84-471c-b203-603b7131d058) already and tried the solution given there (set environment variable), but no luck. Upgrading 2008 x64 to 2008 R2 hangs when installing drivers. I can open Task Manager and see a bunch of "drvinst.exe" instances but nothing using CPU. I left it overnight and it didn't progress. I have used msconfig to disable all non-MS services and other Startup items. I un-teamed the network adapters, ran chkdsk, and have tried this about 5 times. It always hangs during the "transferring files, settings, and programs" before showing any kind of % or (x of y files) indicator. Dell PowerEdge 2950, dual quad core, 12 GB RAM, running MS System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM) 2007 with a SAS drive array (Dell PowerVault MD-1000) connected. This upgrade went fine on my secondary DPM server, but fails repeatedly on this primary server. Here's what I found in the c:\$windows.~bt\sources\panther\setuperr.log file: 2010-10-24 09:37:29, Error Number of Enumerated Devices = 11[gle=0x00000103] 2010-10-24 09:37:30, Error Failed to find driver file path. Hi, Please try below: 1. Restart the computer. Then, your computer will roll back to Windows Server 2008. 2. Click Start , right-click Computer , and then click Properties . 3. On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables . 4. Under System variables , click New . 5. Type MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS in the Variable name field. 6. Type IphlpsvcMigPlugin.dll in the Variable value field. 7. Click OK three times to close the dialog boxes. 8. Start the upgrade installation again. Hi, How are things going? I have not heard back from you in a few days and wanted to check on the status of the issue. Please let me know how things turned out. Tim, After successfully upgrading (in-place) THREE Server 2008 Standard machines to Server 2008 R2 (with SP1), I'm now getting the above described errors. Creating the MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS doesn't seem to resolve the issue. I WAS, however, able to get the "bthports" failing (bailing out) message to go away, by setting the MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS to "bthmigplugin.dll". Is MIG_UPGRADE_IGNORE_PLUGINS documented anywhere? Can one specify MULTIPLE entries in that env. variable (what is the delimiter)? Any insight would be appreciated!wardmd
