Windows Server 2008 leaves files open

Hi,

we run a Windows Server 2008 which is file server and terminal server as well.

Some users got the problem that open files and directories wont get closed probably.

So there are many open files left on the server. For example user b has currently 130 files open. But this is not true. When you take control over the remote session on the terminal server there are no files open in explorer or applications.

How can we fix this problem? Is there a possibility to set a timeout for open files?

Thanks a lot.

Cheers,

Sebastian

Hi Sebastian,

As you mentioned "userB" has 130 files open. Could you confirm if all such kind of users are terminal server users or not?

Meanwhile, if there is no open file in explorer or applications, have you checked Task Manager? Sometimes application is closed but the process is not terminated correctly and still running in background.

Also please try the tool Handle.exe to see if it could help find the exact process which locked the files:

In addition, whether affected files are same file type such as Office files or not? Please let us know.

If the issue still exists please simply unmark the answer and share the current situation with us. Thank you for your time!
