Windows Server 2008 R2 probing Akamai Technologies

Hi

We have been receiving numerous net probes from our servers going to Akamai Technologies network, mainly going to deploy.static.akamaitechnologies. We know that Microsoft uses Akamai for Web content and other services but we have a closed network and doesn't have access to the internet. We are trying to stop the probing. The Windows Update and Update Service has already been stopped and we have also Enable the policy to Restrict Internet Communication as advise by the technet guide below.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc734054%28v=ws.10%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

After Enabling the policy, a number of probes from different IP (all belonging to Akamai) has stopped but a few still remains.

Any advise on how we can stop the probing. Please help.

Regards

Hi Abhe,

Any advise on how we can stop the probing

Please uninstall Akamai Technologies related program via Program and Features.

If related programs cannot be found, you may use netstat.exe to find out which port is sending network packages, then uninstall the program which binds this port.

Netstat

Hi Amy

We don't have any Akamai related programs. After running a networking monitoring tools, we have manage to identify the processes related to the mentioned traffic. They are as follow.

W3WP.exe  (IIS Process Worker) --> We have stopped the sites that are running in IIS since we are no longer using them. Traffic is no longer seen on this.

jusched.exe (Java Update) --> Even though we have set the Java to never check for an update, it is still trying to. We will edit the registry to completely stop this.

SQLPS.exe (SQL Server PowerShell) --> This is a utility that start PowerShell session with the SQL server PowerShell provided. We are trying to figure out on why is this utility trying to connect to Akamai and how to stop this. Maybe you can help to advice us on this one.

Thanks.

Regards,

Abhe
