Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 installation issue(s)
I have a windows server 2008 R2 Std which have WSUS on it.
I had try to install SP1, but it stops at the middle of installation (just the installation of SP1, the server didn't hangs) but the instalation progress bar didn't move for very long time (2hrs). So I hard shut down the server and when powered back on it
gives me updating files in a full DOS like screen and stops at a
Fatal Error C0000034 applying update operation 263 of 109469 (_00000...)
After that the windows did not boot at all until I found the following
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/1c9a7151-b48c-4a98-aae7-a4b82682ea8e#bcabda57-7338-499f-aee2-d708e76df315
to delete part from pending.xml on C:\Windows\winsxs\
This makes windows to boot but in the windows update log it shows that SP1 is failed to install and when you locks at the system propirties it say Windows 2008 R2 Service Pack 1.
When I try to reinstall SP1 it fails with Event ID 8 and Description is
Service Pack installation failed with error code 0x80070bc9 .
For me seams that I need to uninstall SP1, but it is not on the update list to uninstall it?
Any help will be appriciated.
Thank you
Tamer

Please proceed like that:
Run sfc /scannow Run chkdsk /r /f Install the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Server 2008 R2
If this does not solve the problem, please
reset Windows Updates Components.
If the problem persists, please restore your system state using a backup performed before the first install of SP1 an repeat the steps I mentioned.

I had done the sfc and chkdsk and install the
Readiness tool and still have the same issue.
Also the reset windows updates components is not for Windows server 2008 R2.
I don't have a recent backup and will need to fix that without restoring.
Thanks

Hi,
First please refer to the following article to uninstall SP1:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/uninstall-sp1
If SP1 cannot be uninstalled, please try to perform an in-place upgrade of Windows Server 2008 R2. If in-place upgrade is blocked, I am afraid that you
have to reinstall the system.

Hi everybody
this is better solution, than re-installing full system:
1. boot up your PC and press F8
2. select "Repair Your Computer" mode
3. when it starts - chose "Command Prompt)"
4. than start "notepad.exe"
5. open file (ctrl+O) C:\Windows\winsxs\pending.xml
Disk drive could be another. like D etc.
6. find (ctrl+f) this string “0000000000000000.cdf-ms”.
7. and delete this string like on screenshot:
8. save and reboot
cheers

Hello,
Do not do that, your machine is in an torn servicing state if you use that to recover and you will probably need to rebuild.
Use the script in the KB article, SP1 will complete an successful installation
975484 Your computer may freeze or restart to a black screen that has a "0xc0000034" error message after you install Windows 7 Service Pack 1
