Windows Server 2008 R2 Last known good changed the name of my domain controller
Had server running for several weeks and had a problem adding an app. Booted to last known good and it changed the computer name for this computer. This computer is the Forest root domain controller. I used regedit to change the name back and have some access back now but security with several apps and other computers is broken. Any reason why it changed name of the DC? How do I get security working again? The app I was installing was LiveVault client for 2008 64bit. This is a two server domain, this server 2008 R2 64bit and a 2003 32bit. The 2003 server was DC in a one server domain. I did the dcpromo to dump the old domain then joined the new domain and did the dcpromo to have a seccond dc in the new domain. The 2003 server can't dcpromo out and won't "last server" dcpromo. It is "unwilling to process request". If I can't find a fix for the Active Directory I will rebuild, but I don't want to make all of the lap top users return to the office to join the new domain.

I'm not completely following you. how many DCs are in your domain? which one are you having trouble with? if you have a failed dcpromo (demote) you need to force the dcpromo, sieze fsmo roles, and do metadata cleanup, and delete all references in DNS. If it was a DNS server and any clients point to that IP for DNS edit their NIC settings. 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/332199 2008 http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731871(WS.10).aspx

I have two servers, 2008 64bit R2 and 2003. I started with two servers in two domains. I migrated everyone out of old domain to new domain. dcpromo the 2003 server out of the old domain, then joined the new domain. Did the dcpromo to become a DC on the new domain. Things seemed to work at that time. After failing the install of Live Vault client on the new 2008 server, I booted to "last known good" and thats when everything broke. Because the 2008 server name changed. My biggest problem is security is broken in my domain due to the forest root server changing its name. When did "last known good" start changing names on domain controllers. Is that new with 2008 64bit R2. If I could fix security on the 2008 box then the 2003 box would connect and replicate and truly be a DC. Now it can only see the Acitve Directory when the 2008 box is online.

No backup, I was installing Live Vault client to do a backup. What about the name change thing? That can't be normal.

No, this is the first time I've heard of "last known good" changing a computer name. Had it been changed recently? So, where we are now is the 2003 domain controller never replicated after DCPROMO and it can't communicate with the only other DC? I don't see a lot of hope here brownpuff. maybe someone else will have some ideas.

Hello brownpuff, Please try to correct invalid hostname and NV hostname entries with correct NetBIOS name for the problematic Server under TCP/IP parameters and also remove invalid DNSRegisteredAdapters from registry. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DNSRegisteredAdapters If the issue persists, please collect the MPSreport for further investigation. How to collect an MPS report: a) Download the proper MPS Report tool from the website below. Microsoft Product Support Reports http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=CEBF3C7C-7CA5-408F-88B7-F9C79B7306C0&displaylang=en b) Double-click to run it. If the requirement is not met, please follow the wizard to download and install them. After that, click Next, when the "Select the diagnostics you want to run" page appears, select General; Internet and Networking; Business Network; Server Components; click Next. c) After collecting all log files, choose "Save the results". Choose a folder to save the <Computername> MPSReports.cab file. For your convenience, I have created a workspace for you. You can upload the information files to the following link. (Please choose "Send Files to Microsoft") Workspace URL: (https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/ChooseTransfer.aspx?key=e328cab0-cad0-4490-aaef-e115f0531b59) Password: 6#pMuccrvZ Brent Hu,Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. I did do a regedit and changed the name back everywhere. I still have problems with connections and security due to the SID changing I think. I’m collecting the data on both of my servers now and will be sending it along soon. Thanks.
