Windows Server 2008 R2 - Remote Desktop Connection - Black Screen
Hi We are trying to connect to a system running Windows Server 2008 R2 but once the log in credentials are entered it goes through the logging in process but then the screen just pauses on a black screen. The system is totally unresponsive and is almost frozen. We tried disabling the persistent bitmap caching, logging on from a different location and also other options like altering the display settings. Could we receive some assistance on this issue as soon possible please? Thanks.

Hi, Few questions... Since how long you have had this issue ? Only a particular server is affected or are there any other servers having this issue ? Any recent patch, software or drivers have been updated on the server in question ? Is it a Terminal Server ? have you tried rebooting the server ? I do not represent the organisation I work for, all the opinions expressed here are my own. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees and confers no rights.

Hi Since how long you have had this issue ? We've had the issue only for today. Only a particular server is affected or are there any other servers having this issue ? It's only this particular server that's being affected. Any recent patch, software or drivers have been updated on the server in question ? We've installed a HP Laserjet 1505 and also the drivers for it. Is it a Terminal Server ? Yes, it's a Terminal Server. have you tried rebooting the server ? Yes, we've tried rebooting the server multiple times. Also, I'd just like to add that this is a Virtual Server on VMware vSphere Client and we can access the server through the Console but not through RDP. Through the console the server is very slow and almost unresponsive, to the point of being unable to work on it. We've also restarted the server in Safe Mode through the VMware vSphere Client Console and it is quicker but we still cannot access it via RDP. From Safe Mode, we can't check the Event Viewer because it is disabled since Windows doesn't allow it, and we are also unable to do a system restore since it is running Windows Server 2008. I've also noticed that 15 minutes after logging in the server is stuck on a blank blue screen. Also, we've tried running mstsc /admin and we also ran a Check Disk but the issue is still not resolved. Thanks.

Update: After 20 minutes it's finally logged on but everything's really slow, it takes around 2 minutes just to do a right click and the CPU usage is stuck on 100%.

Any recent patch, software or drivers have been updated on the server in question ? We've installed a HP Laserjet 1505 and also the drivers for it. For testing, remove the drivers. Reboot the server again and see if that makes any difference. Also, I would suggest you to create a thread in TS forum ( mentioning this thread as a reference ) wherein you would likely to get more help than here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverTS/threads ThanksI do not represent the organisation I work for, all the opinions expressed here are my own.
