Windows Server 2008 R2
Hi,
I'm new here and this is my first post so please go easy.
Basically the issue I have an installation of Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 that I am testing things with.
The issue is I recently did a Windows update on the server and it got to 5 out of 17 updates installed.
Now I waited for an extrmeley longtime and then decided to look at the event viewer to find the following:
"The Windows Modules Installer service terminated unexpedtly. It has done this XX times"
The next event in the viewer is:
The Windows Modules INstaller service entered the running state.
Under the Application log I am getting:
Faulting applivation name: Trustedinstaller.exe version: 6.1.7600.16385 (with a nunch of other stuff probably uncessary to type?)
I cancelled the update and just restarted the server. The same thing is happening. The service keeps crashing and restarting and taking out the trustedinstaller.exe with it.
I've done some reading "here and there" to find out it is probably stuck on some update and a pending xml file. I just cant figure out how to stop the service crashing and restarting as well as taking out the trustedinstaller app.
The resources on the server are getting chewed up every so often and then get released. Its in a chronic cycle.
I was wondering if installing SP1 would fix the issue or if anyone knows how I can fix the issue?
I dont want to install SP1 only to damage or BS the server!
Thanks guys!
The server is a HP Proliant DL380 G5 - Windows Server 2008 R2 x64.

Often applying a Service Pack will resolve issues like this (Not always, though). You mentioned you were "testing things with" in regards to this server. If that's correct, would it be safe to say this is not a live/critical server at this time?
If that is the case, apply SP1. That would be my next logical step. If it is a live server, then you would need to make sure things are backed up, etc. Then we need to dig a bit deeper into this issue, and determine what to do about this.
Thanks,
James

Hi Brinkmann,
It isnt a live server per-say as the "live" stuff per-say are running in virtual machines..
So therotically I could just move the VM's elsewhere. I downloaded the SUS but havent run it yet.
The SP1 is also ready to run too so i'm all set to give that a try... How would you advise to proceed?
Thanks pal!

Hi,
As this issue can occur due to third-party software conflictions, I suggest performing a Clean Boot to test the issue first.
Clean Boot
========
1. Click Start, type "MSCONFIG" (without the quotations) in the Search Bar and Press "Enter" to start the System Configuration Utility.
Note: Please click Continue if the "User Account Control" window pops up.
2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
4. Restart the computer and test the issue.
Note: Clean Boot is a troubleshooting step. If some programs have been disabled, we can re-enable them later. If you see the System Configuration Utility,
check the box of "Don't show this message" and then click "OK".
If the issue persists, please run the System Update Readiness Tool:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
After that, please upload the following files to
https://sftus.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=b4b4fff8-5b60-4a27-b735-ce3db9c193a2 (Password: {pk49s_v!UVT5Wb}
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log
In addition, please help answer the following questions:
1.
What are the IDs of the updates which cannot be installed?
2.
What’s the error event ID?

Ok the situation is as follows..
I've disabled all the non-microsoft services and startup's and the error has gone away HOWEVER a different error has occoured involving the HP Tape Drivers and the WMI service. This persits for around 8-10 minutes and then the server returns to complete
normality.
The WMI service changes from "automatic start" to on "demand start only" and everything ticks along just fine.
p.s. if you run windows update just once it brings the original error back and it then starts its loop over and over again.
As long as windows update is not started the issue doesnt kick off but the HP tape driver and WMI issue comes back.
Bare in mind this issue didnt exist at all until I ran Windows update on February 28th and it got stuck on update 5 of 17.
I have all the KB's that failed however they are a very long list. If it helps, ALL updates until December 2010 have installed just fine.
Do you want me to run the SURT whilst all the services and startup's are disabled or would you like me to switch them on first?

Hi Tim,
I have tried countless times to upload the files and I constantly get the error:
No workspace was found corresponding to the supplied password. The password or web page address (URL) may be incorrect. Please verify the password with a Microsoft Support Professional.
I have tried with and without the curly brackets and I have also tried typing it manually (not copy-paste). Can you kindly assist?

Sorry, but the password should be {pk49s_v!UVT5Wb

Hi Tim,
I have uploaded the files for you. Could you kindly take a look?
In any case the problem seems to have gone away. I have a few error messages with WMI but these are seem to be related to the HP drivers. Should I know consider running the SP1 upgrade straight from the DVD?
Thanks!

Hi,
Thank you for sending me the files.
From the CheckSUR.log file, we can see it detected and fixed an error. Now could you install updates successfully? If not, please run the System Update
Readiness Tool again and then paste the result in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Hi,
I'll keep my eye out for another 3 days or so and get back to you. It looks good so far.
If the case continues to be in a good state should I go ahead and deploy SP1 from the DVD download on the microsoft website
Saving bandwidth over using Windows Update?

Hi,
You can do both when your network is not busy.
