Windows Server 2003 - Users experiencing delay when starting applications
I have a Windows Server 2003. My desktop XP users are experiencing 20 to 30 second delays when they try to start an application by clicking an icon on their desktop, which is an application that exists on the server. Is there a way to trace the user session on the windows server to determine what is happening when the users attempt to start an application?

Hi Is there any event logs.... you can try perfmon to set the memory counter in it and check the server load... http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Windows_2003_Performance_Monitor.html And don't forget to check the network bandwidth also... Let us know the updates so that we can help you... Regards Rajesh J S

Thanks for helping... There is nothing in the event logs that indicate that there are problems. It all looks good. The network bandwidth is about .5-2% out of 100Mbps. The pages/sec spikes up to about 20-40% when the user attempts to run the application but then decreases to zero. Memory seems fine. Is there a way to trace a single user session on the server itself, allowing you to see what is happening when the user attempts to startup an application. By the way... the users workstation and the actual windows server are attached to the same network switch. This happens to every user, which is the reason why I'm focusing on the server.

The application is a retail application called Counterpoint. There has been no updated to the application and there has been no update to the OS. It seeem like it has been getting slower over time, meaning that it takes a longer time to start when the user clicks on the desktop icon.

Hi Motomac,AFAIK , your problem is more towards the custom applicaiton. You can check the below steps to confirm if the problem is realted to OS or application. a) check if this behavior is occuring with different applicaiton or only with your custom app b) make sure you have sufficient ram c) are you experiencing performance problem with teh application once it is opened ?, you might need to debug the app to find out more about the memory allocation and de-allocation so first step woudl be to break down the problem into 2 pieces ( os and app ) and let us know If it is an applicaiton problem, then you should debug your code to identify the bottleneckIf the problem is with the OS , then we would be happy run the possible utilities to identify the problem.
