Windows Server 2003
I have two servers, the main server running Windows 2003 Server SE, OS and the other, an application server, for a Document Management Application, which runs Win 2003 Server R2. I recently promoted the application server to a Domain Controller to provide redundancy in case of failure. I would like to know how to configure the DNS server for this Server, so that it can reduce on burden on the main server and have clients dynamically connect to in case of failure on the main server.

Hi Using the below link please update the server as the DNS server and configure this server ID as the secondary DNS server in all the clients. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814591 Please let us know in case you need further details… Regards Rajesh J S

hi winstonw, thank you for posting in windows server. I have read the problem description and i want to understand more about the architecture. How does promoting a member server to DC helps you to provide redundency in case of failure : this can only be achieved with the below a) NLBb) Clustering c) VM ware solution : High availability , DRM ( distributed resouce management ) And i believe you need to configure the applications on both servers to have redundency using either NLB or microsoft clustering solutions in which configuring DNS would be a solution. Please correct me if i miss something.sainath !analyze

Hi Winstonw,For the redanduncy of the DNS configuration in multi-Domain controller environment, you will need to check the Example of a Domain Controller Configuration Worksheet in the Collect Regional Domain Design Information http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc758978(WS.10).aspx,For the more about DNS server placement, please check Planning DNS Server Deployment http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc960550.aspx and Troubleshooting Active Directory—Related DNS Problems http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727055.aspxHope it helps.Best regards,ScorprioMCTS: Windows Vista | Exchange Server 2007 MCITP: Enterprise Support Technician | Server & Enterprise Admin
