Windows Messenger
I just received a new Win7 workstation. My problem is that it will not receive the alert messages from our servers that I have set up. It does not have a messenger service. Are there any reasonably simple alternatives??

How did you configure you alert? Net Send? MSG.EXE replaces Net Send in Windows 7 Santhosh Sivarajan | MCTS, MCSE (W2K3/W2K/NT4), MCSA (W2K3/W2K/MSG), CCNA, Network+ Houston, TX http://blogs.sivarajan.com/ http://publications.sivarajan.com/ This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi Myrt, Messenger Service is obsolete. The old "net send" functionality no longer exists on Vista and Windows7. Please use MSG.exe instead of Net Send command in Windows 7 client. For more information about MSG.exe command, please refer to the following TechNet article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771903(WS.10).aspx Sincerely, Wilson JiaThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. What is important is that the alerts I have set up in the Performance module of Win2003 server can be received and displayed by a Win7 workstation. I beleive the Performance logs and alerts uses Net Send for the alerts. Can a message sent by Net Send be received and displayed by msg.exe??

Hi Myrt, As Windows 7 does not include the Message service, so it is not able to receive the Net Send message. Regards, Wilson JiaThis posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. Please click "Mark as Answer" when you get the correct reply to your question.

The solution is to wrap a powershell script in a batch file and have the "Run Program" option in Performance logs and alerts call the batch file. It works better if the ps script and batch file are in the same folder.
