Windows Event Log Service stops after being started
Thanks Zhang, That was it - moved everything out of the winevt\logs folder and event log service ran and stayed running. All the other services could then be started and my SBS is back running as it should! I think I'd tried everything else - typical that the solution is such a simple one! Thanks again - you saved me another day of frustration. Paul

Hi, Following a server power failure (SBS 2008) I have a strange problem with the Windows Event Log service. It appears not to start when the server boots - and dependent services also don't start (Exchange, DNS etc..). If I start the service manually it successfully starts but as soon as I try to start any other service that depends on it, or try to start event viewer the Log service stops (no error message, the service just stops) After starting the service I can get some of the other services running (e.g. start Log service and then start DNS service, then start Log service again before starting another service), but some of the services just won't start as it seems the Log service doesn't stay running for long enough. I'm thinking it could be a corruption in one or more of the log files but don't know how to reset them. can I just delete them? - and which folder should I delete from - \program files\microsoft small business server\Logs \windows\logs \windows\system32\logfiles \windows\system32\winevt\logs I've spent all day trying to resolve this but I'm getting nowhere. I'm now without important services (mainly email) - although most of the server is running. I'm hoping that someone has come across this problem and can help me - I'm getting fairly desperate now! Thanks in advance, Paul

Its possible one or more files are corrupt in \Windows\System32\winevt\Logs but I would think service would still start. You might try; sc query eventlog to see what it returns with. Also might ask them more here. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/smallbusinessserver/threads Regards, Dave Patrick .... Hello, I would suggest you backup the %SystemRoot%\System32\Winevt\Logs directory and wipe it. It could also be a permission issue. Compare the Security tab of the Winevt folder against another known-good SBS server. I also found that this problem can caused by incorrect Region settings. Check the below thread. Regional and Language Settings should never prevent Event Log service from running http://connect.microsoft.com/WindowsServerFeedback/feedback/details/468670/regional-and-language-settings-should-never-prevent-event-log-service-from-running Server 2008 Event Log Service stuck in "Starting" http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/Windows/microsoft.public.windows.server.general/2009-07/msg00625.html 1. Open Regional and Language Options from the control panel. 2. In the Formats tabs, select English (United States) OR the locale which was used when installing the OS 3. Click on the Administrative tab and click Change System Locale, select English (United States) 4. Please do not restart the server at this point as it would pop up for a restart 5. On Administrative tab, click on Copy to reserved accounts 6. Select Select both checkboxes in the details: Default user account(new users) System accounts(local system, local service, and network service) 7. Press Ok, Close and rebooted the server. If still no luck, please ask in SBS forum for how to perform a system repair.
