Windows 98 with a Server 2008 Domain?
Has anyone been able to connect Windows 98 to a Server 2008 Domain? We've done everything listed on other posts, but can only browse the file shares and open tiny files (<100bytes) through explorer. If we type "type <file>.txt" via a Command Prompt, it just hangs. Any ideas?Josh Lindenmuth

Hello, already answered in: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/winserverDS/thread/d947d8f2-d891-4680-88a1-620cfa80e381 Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. The link provided in that "answer" is for connecting Win98 to a Server 2003 domain. You'll note that the other questions after that "answer" all stated that it did not work. It did not work for us either. We can log in to a domain, we can browse the network, and we can open tiny files, but do not have full file services and the connection drops after a short period of time. Any help you or others can provide would be greatly appreciated.Josh Lindenmuth

Hello,2003 or 2008 is not a difference in that case.If the connection drops, let's see the ipconfig /all from the windows 98 and the DC/DNS server.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi, By lowering the security just to add windows 98 clients in a secure domain of windows 2008, we would have an insecure domain with different security attacks to the domain. Keeping the security concern, supportability would suggest you to upgrade the windows 98 to workstations to Windows XP sp3 or Vista in order to obtain the better product. Legacy Operating systems are unsupported. Please go through the following links on details of product life cycles. Windows Life-Cycle Policyhttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx Microsoft Support Lifecycle Policy FAQ http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy If you indeed need to add Windows 98, please try all the suggestions below: How to enable Windows 98/ME/NT clients to logon to Windows 2003 based Domainshttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/555038 When a Windows NT 4.0-based computer tries to use the NETLOGON service to establish a security channel to a Windows Server 2008-based domain controller, the operation may failhttp://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=942564 Client computers may not work correctly when you add a Windows Server 2008-based domain controller to an existing pre-Windows Server 2008 domainhttp://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=946405 Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

This did the trick for me too: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=946405 Thanks Mervyn! I should note that at first it did not appear to make any difference but the next day (today) I was able to log into the 2008 Domain perfectly. It stopped working initially because I have a mixed domain and I decommissioned the server 2003. David P.S. this is my home setup and I would NEVER do this on my servers at the office.
