Windows 7 Unable to Map Windows 2000 drive
I have 2 computers on a home network 1 running W 2000 Pro and the other one was running Vista. While I had Vista on my newer machine it was completely ablr to map the drives on the W 2000 Pro system. I upgraded the Vista machine to W 7. Now when I go to map the W 200 Pro drives onto the W 7 machine it fails the password - even though I haven't changed the password on thew W 2000 Pro machine. Can you map W 2000 Pro drives on a local network to W 7? What do I need to do?Thanks,

I also am having the same problem. I have 8 computers in my home network and I just built a new Windows 7 Pro box. It will not browse the workgroup nor will it connect to my main computer a Windows 2000 Pro box. I tried to mapping a drive using IP address as well DNS name. When it goes to connect it asked for a password, I enter and it says: The specified network password is not correct. I have changed password and doule and triple checked it so the password is correct. Any help is greatly appreciated. My son has a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium and It mapped all drive fine Thanks

I have various versions of Windows from 3.11, NT4, 98 2k, XP and now 7. I cannot map from 7 to NT4, I am within a domain structure, the NT 4 box is a stand alone workstation therefore I use pcname\username for the username. I continually get promted for the password with the error wrong password. I can map this drive from any other version of Windows. My guess is it has something to do with the pass-through authentication with active directory which I have with server 2k3. I have tried username@pcname, just username, none of which work. Can anyone shed any light on this problem and if there is a work around?

I think this is might be due to the fact that Vista and 7 use NTLMV2 by default. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx The link is a technet entry about Vista networking, but I suspect the same is true for Windows 7. As for Pre Vista and 7 computers not showing up when you browse the network from a Vista or 7 computer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc749119%28WS.10%29.aspx Again, a link about Vista. Might be the same for 7. "Network Map in WindowsVista diagrams the connections between network devices to help you troubleshoot connectivity problems. Network Map uses a discovery protocol called Link-Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) in order to query the other devices on the network to determine how the network is organized. Computers that are running WindowsVista include the software components that implement the LLTD protocol. For network computers that are running WindowsXP to appear on the map, they must have a discovery protocol enabled that can respond to the mapping computer's requests." Bits of Fury

When I was running Vista the W2000 drives mapped fine - it wasn't until I "upgraded" to W7 that I was unable to map the W2000 drives....

Needs to be a DWORD named LmCompatibilityLevel set to value of 1(one) atHKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa And here's the background on that.http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc960646.aspxhttp://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2006.08.securitywatch.aspx Regards, Dave Patrick .... This seemed almost too good to be true, a simple registry edit... Looking in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa...there is no entry for LmCompatibilityLevel nor can I find the entry searching the whole registry. Could this be beacuse I am running Win7 64bit?

If it doesn't exist you may need to ADD it. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/147706 Regards, Dave Patrick .... Microsoft Certified Professional -Microsoft MVP [Windows]

Thanks for the suggestion and reference Dave. I have added LmCompatibilityLevel to ..../CurrentControlSet/Control/Lsa ...at least a dozen times today (under admin login). But every time I reboot the system the line disappears. Weird. I get the pwd request issue mentioned at the start of the thread.
