Windows 2008 keeps rebooting
One of our servers keeps rebooting just after startup - usually 20-60 sec. after the logon screen appears. The same happens with Fail Safe boot. But I can start up in Last Good Known Configuration. It is not a BSOD and no entries in the eventlog. The screen just fades to black and then restarts. - Nothing to start tracing from... System. Windows 2008 DataCenter - Fully updated HP DL 380 G6 • I tried to disable different devices - which resuts in that I cannot enable them again?!? • Updated/ downgraded HP hardware. Any idea what to do next?

Hiya, Do you have PSP installed? I believe that there is a crash error on exactly that model relating to PSP.

Do you mean Customer Care Pack or Support Pack installation files? (trying to install different drivers, but as long I cannot get it to boot up normally any drivers installed/ uninstalled will not work. Always going back to Last Good Known) I did read quite a lot about this model having some problems, but the SN is not in that range. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c01955503 I have SN xx937xxxx and not xxx947xxxx. I have another server from the same batch that runs without problems.

Hiya, Was relating to the Support Pack. Previously I had the experience of one server completely messing up, with 4 others from same batch working without problems. I would try by using a older version of the support pack, if you can get it to run with last good known. I remember there was one specific PSP that made the server crash, alltho I cant quite remember which exactly it was... Was about 5 months ago tho, so might have been fixed with the most recent...

Hiya, In relation to your link, I'd say your server is in scope for the referenced update: "SCOPE A limited number of the following ProLiant DL380 G6-based servers and StorageWorks products that are configured with a system board having a revision level earlier than "0S," that were shipped prior to 16 November 2009, and that have a serial number earlier than xxx 947xxxx"

Just to follow up for anyone else on this thread. As far as I could dig out on our problems it was related to faulty firmware on a PSU controller that caused the specific model of server to reboot unexpectedly. And as far as I know applying the latest PSP wouldnt update this component. Specific firmware needed to be obtained from HP and applied.. However if your running with a repository server for your hardware managem nt, it should catch it and upgrade as appropriate..

I have the same ____ problem and my server is a Dell. So... that pointing Microsoft for the problem.
June 9th, 2010 3:31am

Hi Alex, There is a problem specifically relating to that model and manufacture. If you have a similar problem with your Dell machine it is obviously not caused by the same factors. :) You see some cases where manufactures uses the same type of components and there you will have the problem spread out across multiple manufactures. I dont know the exact component name for neither HP nor Dell, so cant say if that is the case here. All in all there are quite alot of different things that can course your server to reboot unexpectedly. If you dont see anything logged in the event viewer, it is usually caused by a hardware malfunction. Hopefully this can give a little inspiration on how to solve your issue. I'd recommend to create a seperate thread if you want further feedback, as this thread relates to "Advisory: (Revision) ProLiant DL380 G6-Based Servers and StorageWorks Products"

We had the systemboard changed but still the same. I gave up on this and reinstalled OS and it seems to be ok now. - Went to a conference yesterday with HP and G7 technologies and asked about the green line philosophy and powersaving issues with the G6/ dynamic power and strange reboots. They said that the powersupplies could be the issue... Maybe I should just buy some new hardware... But for now I will just keep an eye on updates from HP/ Microsoft to see if the issue gets back. The worst part in this is that I have to order external consultants to install the special applications all over (around 2000 Euros!!) Thanks to all for replying.

Just make sure that you keep some tight survalience on that server. Reinstalling didnt solve the problem for us long term, it eventually reappeared. Our real concern was to catch the "flipping" of the server.
