Windows 2008 Server vs Windows 2008 Server R2
Hello. Excuse me, I'd like to know what it takes to upgrage from Windows 2008 Server Standard to Windows 2008 Server R2 Standard Ed. Will I have, for example, to pay an other licence to get the upgrade or the whole thing can be performed automatically through normal Internet downloads (with Windows update) ? Thank you

Hello, yes it is a new license and as Windows server 2008 R2 is 64 bit ONLY you can not do an inplace upgrade from 32 bit version.Best regards Meinolf Weber Disclaimer: This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties or guarantees , and confers no rights.

Hello, Thanks a lot. Actually the installed system (Windows 2008 Server) is a 64 bit version. But I note that a new licence is needed anyway. Best regards

You can perform an upgrade from RTM x64 to R2 x64 as long as the RTM install wasn't from a sysprep'd image. I'm not sure why that is an issue, but it is. Also, R2 in 2008 isn't like in 2003. It's not just an add-on, it's a change from the Vista kernel to the Windows 7 kernel. It's truly upgrading to a newer OS. Weigh the benefits of an inplace upgrade with those of a clean install.
