Windows_2008_R2_X64_Windows_Update _Will_Not_Run
please help!
i have a new windows 2008 r2 x64 build that cannot seem to successfully run windows update. i have the windows firewall completely turned off including the service. originally i was able to get the list of updates to download, but when the actual
download was attempting to download nothing happens. Subsequently, when trying to run windows update, i cannot even get the list of updates it needs. even after a server reboot.
i am getting the faulting application name trustedinstaller.exe event error.
i tried stopping 3 services wuauserv, bits, and cryptsvc in DOS as administrator, reregistered the following dlls:

Hi,
What’s your meaning of “nothing happens”? Does any error message appear?
What updates cannot be downloaded?
Please describe the symptom in detail.

it will bring up the list of updates it needs to download and install, but after verifying the list and clicking OK to download, it never does the actual download. status just "spins" indefinitely.

Hi,
Please try the following steps:
Step 1 Rename Windows Update Temporary folders
=================================
1. Click Start, in Start Search item, type: "notepad" (without quotes) and press Enter.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
net stop wuauserv
net stop Cryptsvc
cd /d %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
rd /s /q DataStore
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start Cryptsvc
3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Save when you are prompted to save the file. Type "register.bat" as the
file name and choose Desktop from the left panel as the location.
4. Refer to the Desktop and right click the register.bat file, then choose Run as administrator.
5. You will see a DOS-like window processing.
Step 2 Verify the relevant Windows Update services
=================================
1. Click the Start Button, in the Start Search bar, type: "services.msc" (without quotes) and press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password
or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
2. Double click the service "Windows Update".
3. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic" or "Manual". Then please click the "Start" button under "Service Status" to
start the service.
4. Please repeat the above steps with the "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service.
You can also temporarily stop these services, restart the computer, and then start these services again. If any service is missing or cannot be stopped
or restarted, please let me know.

thank you for the suggestion....but it made no difference. i have tried running baseline security analyzer v2.2 locally on this server. i am able to get a list of updates to install and am able to download them individually. unfortunately
when i try to run any of the patches i get a "the update is not applicable to your computer." prompt. this is occurring for any patch i try?!?

Hi,
Can you please check, download and install updates from Control Panel\Windows Update? What’s the result?
If available updates are listed via Control Panel\Windows Update, please let me know the IDs of them

I have a similar challenge. I can get by this by turning off the Domain Firewall and it will update just fine. Does anyone know what the Rule for this firewall is to allow for MS Updates to go through without this manual intervention?
Thanks,
Gary
