Windows 2008 Firewall and Outlook to Exchange 2007
Hi I have posted this question in the Exchange forum but no one seems to have the answer so I thought this would be the next logical place to ask as what I think needs to be done is a rule needs to be added or changed. We have a brand new setup and cannot get the Office Outlook 2007 (or 2003) to connect to the Exchange server. The Exchange server is a Windows 2008 virtual machine on a Windows 2008 Data Centre box. If I turn off the Windows 2008 firewall that the Exchange 2007 server is running on then we can connect. I think that tells me that the Exchange setup missed creating a rule in the 2008 firewall. Can anyone tell me what rule I need to create so that Outlook will get through the firewall to Exchange? Thanks Paul

Hello, By default, all rules will be created in the process of the Exchange 2007 installation on the Windows Server 2008. Can you see the rules for Exchange 2007 in Windwos Firewall? If not, it indicates that there were some problems during Exchange 2007 installation so the Exchange related firewalls were not generated automatically. If you have another working Windows 2008 server with Exchange 2007 installed, you may export all Exchange related firewall rules from that server and then import them to the problematic server. As I am not very familiar with Exchange, I am not sure which ports should be opened to enable client access. I think that Exchange guys would be better resource here. As far as I know, when a MAPI client such as Microsoft Outlook connects to an Exchange server, the client first connects to the RPC endpoint mapper (the RPC Locator Service) on TCP port 135. The RPC endpoint mapper tells the client which ports to use to connect to the Exchange Server service, which are dynamically assigned. I accidentally reset the firewall rules after the installation of Exchange and my rules were removed. By chance could you please post the rules that are set up on your machine so that I can replicate them or even better could you email me an export? Thanks in advanceJim
