Windows 2008 DC
we have a windwosn 2000 domain and funtional level. i am wanting to update to a windows 2008 DC. i have a windows 2008 server build and on the network as a member server and all is working just fine. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience adding a 2008 server as a secondary domain controller. seventually after being a secondary domain controller i would like to promote to primary domain controller. I have been testing in a test enviroment for a while. just wanted to know if anyone has done it it production and what trials/tribulations have you experienced.Danny G Guillory Jr.

Hello, first of all there is no primary and secondary DC. All DCs are RW except RODCs. To upgrade to 2008 AD DS, refer to this Microsoft article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731188(WS.10).aspx Proceed like mentioned in the article so that you will be able to add the 2008 server as a DC. Once done, transfer FSMO roles to this DC. To transfer FSMO roles: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/255690/ It is recommanded to have at least two DC/DNS/GC server per domain. Danny G Guillory Jr. You will need to make sure that you're at a minimum of at least 2000 Native Forest Functionality before you can implement 2008 as a secondary DC.3 As far as trials and tribulations... typically if you run a healthy domain... nothing special or fancy with changes in the schema, you should be alright. Installing Additional Domain Controllers http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733027(WS.10).aspx Not sure if there are too many issues to be expected as long as you verify healthy DC diagnostics tool checks. Good Luck on your planning and installation.
