Windows 2003 Enterprise Server - Opening IE resets shell folders values in registry
Hi, I need to change my HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Desktop registry value from an UNC path (this path is set up by folder redirection) to a local path (because of a java application that reads that value from the registry to store some files, and it seems not to work well with UNC paths). I can change the registry value from the UNC path to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Desktop without any problem, but whenever I open Internet Explorer, that value is changed back to the UNC path instantly. Anyone knows how to avoid this? OS is a Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition with Service Pack 2 installed IE version is 7.0.5730.13 Thanks in advance --- Matteo Brioschi

Hi, Did you disable the Folder Redirection policy? If not, it would cause this problem. Please try to disable Folder Redirection to test. If the issue persists, on client, run "gpresult /v >>c:\gp.txt", please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the file and then give me the download address. Open ADUC, make sure the user dont have Roaming Profile. Thanks. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights.

Hi, thanks for the help. Disabling Folder Redirection would solve the problem, but I need to redirect Desktop, Application Data and My Documents, so I can't disable it. Modifying both HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders \Desktop and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders \Desktop would solve the problem too, but changing both these values is like disabling folder redirection for the desktop. I found that java uses HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders \Desktop to set the variable "user.home" (a nonsense imho), so I'm trying to contact the vendor of the java application to see what they can do. Thanks again for the help Matteo
