Windows 2003 Ent SP2 Shutdown
Hi People, I have a windows 2003 Ent Edn server with SP2 and i have installed all the latest updates from windows. When i issue a reboot from RDP to this server, it takes more than 40 minutes to shuddown the server but boots in short time. What could be the reason? I have no DB or heavy application running on the server. I have a 32Gig RAM on the box.

It is most likely a service (or a device driver) that delays the shutdown. What services are running on the Server? does your eventlog tell you something while the shutdown is running?

Do you have any error or warning messages in the event log? What updates did you install recently? Hi , Its hard to predict what process is causing the problem unless we debug the operating systems. Yes at the end of the day a thread under the process would be causing the issue but to identify this you would need to perform live debugging . You could test if this behavior is happening a) locally logged on and shutdown the server / restart b) one of the method would be to run process explorer remotely , hook on to the source system and then issue restart and monitor for the threads , it would require effort to understand the process / dll which is causing the problem. after you analyze the dll you would need to check which function has actually not releasing the memory .
