Windows 2003 DHCP server question
Hey all Does a w2k3 DHCP have to in the same network segment as the clients that needs address from it?I have a DHCP server in 192.168.10.x/24and clients in 192.168.11.x/24 I can ping and rdp from one network to another so the routing is good. No clients get IP'S from the DNS server in 10.x.If I move the dhcp server to the 11.x network it works fine.Any ideas? thanks in advance

You will want to setup a DHCP relay on the .11.x network to pass the requests to the .10.x network. This can be done several ways, depending on the router you are using. Or you can do it with a server, I am sure someone on this forum can tell you how to setup the relay server. So, yes, you can have the DHCP server on another segment.Scotty

There are no routers between the two networks the FW is doing the routing and does not support DHCP relay. How would you do it with a server?

This gives you an overview of how to setup the relay agent, and what it does. http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/w2k3/services/DHCP_Relay_Agent.htm http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782859(WS.10).aspx<< technet that gives instructions. You will need a server 2003 on the .11.x network though, to be the DHCP relay server. Windows XP does not support being the relay agent. Good luck on your configuration. Scotty

Some Firewalls call DHCP "BootP"; check to see if your firewall will handle "BootP requests" and turn it on if it does.Larry

Nope...You bring up a good point. You will need to set up aseperate DHCP scopefor the IP range of the workstation's segment. And make sure the firwall allows all the proper "Domain" ports.

Well I tried it and it does not workIm assuming that windows only responds to DHCP broadcasts on the first bound IP

You will want to have a DHCP scope setup on the server for the .11.x network. When the request comes from the relay server, the DHCP server should reconize it is on a different VLAN and send the proper request. You say you set this up, did you use the router or the server. If you used the router, what manufactor/model number are you using? If you are using the server, it should work. By nature, a broadcast is subnet bound, and will not pass. This is the reason for the relay agent, to pass that broadcast request to the proper server. Make sure you have the scope on the server, and the VLAN's configured correctly, which it seems you do. No I meant I tried just adding second IP (in the client subnet) to the current DHCP server. Thats what didnt work.

Hi, I agree with Scotty, a DHCP Relay Agentis requiredto relay DHCP messages between DHCP clients and DHCP servers on different IP networks. For more information, please refer to the following article: Configure the DHCP Relay Agent http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc781416(WS.10).aspx How DHCP Technology Works http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc780760.aspx If you need further assistance regarding DHCP, you can post to the Network Infrastructure Servers forum: Network Infrastructure Servers http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverNIS/threads Thanks.

Is there a way to back up the current DHCP leases out of one DHCP server and restore them on another DHCP server?

Hi, Do you mean moving a DHCP database from one server to another? Please refer to the following article: Move a DHCP Database to Another Server http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd183705.aspx How to move a DHCP database from a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/962355

if I have a remote access server in the 192.168.11.x network and the dhcp server is in the 192.168.10.x network. The scope configured to hand out adds192.168.10.10-250 network. I want the clients that are connecting in through the RAS to get adds from that scope as well. If I install the dhcp relay agant in the 11.x network will this work or will the dhcp realy and server see the requests coming in from the 11.x network and not give an address from the scope? Also does the DHCP relay agent have to be installed on the RAS server or any server in the 11.x network Thanks
