I have tried upgrading to windows 10 from windows 7 home premium and it fails after going through the entire process.

Windows 10 is for free to upgrad it if you have windows 8.1.  You can not upgrad it for free for wndoes8 or windows7 premium.

There are steps to follow, and it would auto. proceed to the next .

Are you now able to get into Win 7 properly?

I have upgraded from windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 recently. I had same problem after installing windows 10 but I worked around with Repair option and it worked. Try it, it might work. There was no specific procedure to follow.
